Why does Rome have us in love? Because it is an open-air museum, because it is the city where you get crammed with ice cream while walking - literally - on a very large piece of history, because it is one of the destinations that you have to know (at least) once in a lifetime. And if you fear for your wallet we have very good news: a trip to Rome is not necessarily expensive, in fact there are many options to enjoy without spending a single euro. Today we are going to tell you 10 things to do for free in Rome.

If you want more information of Rome, visit our GUIDE TO A JOURNEY TO ROME

1. Take the best picture with the Colosseum. The truth is that you look where you look, the Flavio Amphitheater is one of the most beautiful buildings in the world. However there is a place from which to take the best photo: the via Nicola Salvi. Reach her and enjoy the views!

2. Set the alarm very early since at 7 am you have an appointment with the Trevi Fountain: It's the perfect time if you want to enjoy it alone (or almost). As of 08 or 09 it fills up with other tourists and loses almost all the charm.

3. Make a free tour. Ok, technically it is not completely free since at the end of the route it is always good to leave a tip to the guide. But for a handful of euros you will know the Eternal City for a couple of hours, by the hand of an experienced guide and willing to tell you a thousand and one curiosities.

4. Enter one of the most amazing buildings in Rome: the pantheon. This 2000-year-old architectural work is totally free! It is a temple dedicated to all the Roman gods, it was built by Emperor Hadrian on the ruins of the Temple of Agrippa and has a very peculiar curiosity: it was the first pagan temple that became consecrated as a Christian Church!

Tip: it is not free, but on departure, approach the Giolitti Ice Cream Shop, where you eat one of the best ice cream in Rome.

5. Breathe the lively and baroque atmosphere of Navona Square, full of fontanas, monumental buildings and a few street artists that liven up the solemnity of the place. Another beautiful area (and of course free) is the Spain Square, where you can go down the famous staircase of the Trinità dei Monti Church. For us it is one of the most charming places in Rome.

6. And speaking of squares, one of the liveliest corners of Rome, at any time of day and night, is Campo dei Fiori. During the morning, your cobblestone is filled with stalls of fresh produce and flowers. And at night it is the perfect place to go for a drink on its terraces or baretos of its surroundings.

7. Change country without leaving the city! Obviously we talk about Vatican, one of the smallest states in the world and where you can easily reach after a very pleasant walk. We recommend you enter the Vatican Museums, but since this post is about the things to do for free in Rome, here you can enter the Basilica of Saint Peter . Eye, the lines are huge, so the ideal is to get up early to be one of the first ...

Curiosity: in the IOR (Institute of Religious Works) they say that there is a cashier where, among the language options, it lets you choose Latin! If you like frikadas it is a great idea (although if you want it to be free, you better cancel the withdrawal operation :-p).

8. Get lost in one of the most charming neighborhoods in Rome: the Trastevere. It is a good opportunity to set aside the map (or Google Maps) and wander aimlessly through its picturesque streets, enjoying the local atmosphere that is breathed at every step.

9. In Rome there are hundreds and hundreds of churches, we present two very surprising. The Church of San Pietro in Vincoli from the outside it will not attract your attention, but inside one of Michelangelo's most famous sculptures is preserved: the Moses (well, one of the 4 versions he made). The second isSanta Maria della Vittoria that like the previous one could go unnoticed, but inside it houses the Ecstasy of Saint Teresa, Bernini's masterpiece.

10. To have the best views of Rome we recommend two sites: climb the Gianicolo, known as "the eighth hill of Rome", where there is a very cool walk. If, like us, you agree at noon, don't panic if you hear a huge rumble: it is the cannon that, every day at 12 o'clock, makes a commemorative shot. This tradition began with Pope Pius IX to coordinate the schedule of all the churches in Rome, which he said were too disorganized.

And enjoy the best sunset from the panoramic terrace of Pincio deVilla Borghese, very close to Piazza del Popolo.

These are 10 examples, although there are lots of things to do in Rome for free. Just open your eyes and let yourself be surprised by this fascinating city.
